Lorenz Duffschmidt

Lorenz Duftschmid grew up in Linz, Austria, and studied viola da gamba with Jordi Savall at the Schola

Cantorum in Basle. At the age of 25, he was appointed guest professor at the Musikhochschule in Graz

and founded his own period-instrument group, Armonico Tributo Austria. A subgroup of this, the

ensemble AnLeuT, specializes in contemporary music on ancient instruments. He performs and records

regularly with Savall's ensembles Hesperion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya. He also directs two

summer festivals in Austria. Duftschmid performs on a set of original instruments made by Gasparo da

Salo (ca. 1580), Jakobus Stainer (Absam-Tirol, 1679), Nicolas Bertrand (Paris, 1699), and Antony Stephan

Posch (Vienna, 1717).

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
